Safety

The World Health Organisation and the Department of Health suggests for most babies weaning should begin ideally at 6 months. Any foods which contain salt or sugar should be avoided. Definitely DO NOT add salt or sugar to any of the baby's food. Also avoid citrus fruit (until 7-9 months ),shellfish, soft cheeses, chillies, juices, softly cooked eggs, pate ,honey (until one year ), and whole or chopped nuts (until 5 years).

When starting to give solid food to baby, always wash your hands and baby's hands before meals. Always use a separate spoon and bowl for baby, never leave baby unattended when giving solids.

Check the temperature of baby's food before giving to baby, to check it has cooled.

Stir food when heating to distribute heat.

Throw away any food not eaten, even if baby only takes a few mouthfuls.

If baby gags on any foods do not panic. Stay with baby and try to stay calm.

Breast or formula milk should continue to be baby's main drink, although from 6 month's full fat cow's milk can be added to cooking. There's no need to cut the fat with babies. Fat is an important part of their calorie content.

If there is a history of any allergies i.e. eczema, asthma or hay fever, or food intolerances, take care when using foods that can provoke these conditions. If your not sure always consult a health visitor or GP.

Vitamins maybe required for some babies, you can discuss with a health visitor or GP.
